Bio
I am a New York native that moved to Colorado in 1994 to experience the rocky mountains. I have always been an avid recreationist but winters were primarily spent riding lifts and alpine ski racing. Since moving to Gunnison for college, I learned to become an accomplished Nordic skier and AT enthusiast. I no longer had the drive to pursue lift service skiing and found solitude in touring the local backcountry and mountains and embrace the human powered focus. I have shared this love of nature in the winter with my wife Jenny and daughter Jade. I hope that when Jade gets to be my age there will still be opportunities for self-powered winter recreation without the distractions of technology.
Statement
I support the efforts of Elk Mountains Backcountry Alliance to effectively manage our multi-use recreation areas. I feel we need to take a stand to preserve our protected areas where human recreation is primarily self-powered and we can connect with nature as it was intended to be. I am in no way against motorized winter travel and I do use sleds for making Nordic track with Gunnison Nordic. I appreciate having sled tracks to access areas in the backcountry that would make a long and arduous approach otherwise. What I do object to is a lack of respect from motorized groups and pressures to push boundaries. There are more and more recreationists every winter and we need to do our part to be understanding and respect one another. Not everyone wants the same winter experience but we should all have the opportunity to seek and explore nature as we desire.
